McLaren announced today that it has singed an option to join Formula E in its season 9 (2022/2023). McLaren is justifying this move by saying they are evaluation other motorsport platforms.
The signed option allows McLaren to enter the championship as one of maximum twelve entries for the 2022/2023 season.
Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing Sain:
“We’ve been closely observing Formula E for some time and monitoring the series’ progress and future direction. The opportunity to take an option on an entry, together with the completion of the McLaren Applied supplier contract with the FIA at the end of Gen 2, gives us the necessary time to decide if Formula E is right for McLaren as a future competition platform.”
McLaren wasn’t allowed to compete as a team in the sport prior to 2022, as they are the exclusive battery supplier to the series. But, with that deal coming to an end by the end of the 2021/22 season. The team can consider participating. McLaren will spend 2021 evaluating this option and will decide later this year.
