In June of 2020, Former Formula One & Indycar driver Alex Zanardi had a terrible accident during a charitable hand-biking race. He struck a truck in Siena, Italy, and suffered severe brain and facial injuries which put him in a coma. However, earlier this week Italian media announced that Alex Zanardi is awake from his coma.
Alex is responding to the doctors consciously, he is shaking hands, giving thumbs-ups and turning his head. However, Alex still can’t speak at the moment and according to the doctors he is still hasn’t recovered all of his brain functions. The multiple Paralympics medalist had five brain and facial surgeries before waking up from his coma.
Zanardi is famous for his severe crash in Indycar racing back in 2001. The crash caused him to lose both of his legs but his strong will and mentality helped him get back stronger to racing. He later raced in the world touring cars championship with BMW before becoming a Paralympic cyclist. Alex is a role model in not giving up. In case you don’t know him well, we talked about him previously in this article “Who Is Alessandro Zanardi?”
Its great news to know that Alex Zanardi is awake, we wish him a full & speedy recovery.
